A Sanctuary of Diverse Flora

Opened to the public on March 6, 2010, the Gardens showcase a variety of themed areas designed to educate and inspire. Visitors can meander through the Butterfly Garden, where native plants attract a myriad of butterfly species, or find tranquility in the Serenity Garden, a perfect spot for reflection. The Orchid Room displays a stunning collection of orchids, while the Rose Garden boasts a variety of fragrant blooms. Other notable sections include the Bamboo Garden, Bonsai Garden, Bromeliad Island, Cactus & Succulents Island, Hibiscus Garden, Native Plants, Palm Walk, and the Tropical Fruit Garden. A two-acre lake with a fountain serves as a central feature, enhancing the garden’s picturesque landscape.

Historical Roots

The inception of the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens dates back to 2005 when a vision emerged to transform a portion of the old Westmoreland property into a botanical haven. This initiative aimed to utilize and preserve the site’s native plant communities. After securing approval and funding from the Florida Communities Trust Land Conservation Program, construction commenced on March 4, 2009. The Gardens were meticulously designed to integrate restoration and maintenance of the area’s natural biological diversity, ensuring the preservation of nearly seven acres of mangrove wetlands along the river.

Community Engagement and Events

Operated by the non-profit organization Friends of the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, the venue serves as a hub for community activities. Throughout the year, the Gardens host a variety of events, workshops, and educational programs aimed at promoting environmental awareness and horticultural knowledge. Seasonal events, such as the annual illuminated light display during the holidays, draw visitors from across the region.

Exploring the Surrounding Area

The Gardens are situated within The Port District, a revitalized area that blends natural beauty with cultural and recreational amenities. Adjacent to the Gardens are the historic Peacock Lodge and Peacock House, structures dating back to the early 20th century. Relocated and restored with the assistance of a grant from the Florida Department of Historical Resources, these buildings now house the Port St. Lucie History Museum and Education Center, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s rich past.

For those looking to extend their visit, the nearby Boardwalk at The Port District provides scenic views of the river, and the MIDFLORIDA Event Center hosts a variety of cultural and entertainment events throughout the year. The city’s commitment to preserving green spaces is evident in the numerous parks and recreational areas that dot the landscape, making Port St. Lucie a haven for nature enthusiasts.
